Dolphin Pool Replicating the biosystem functions of the oceans in a controlled environment is no simple task. In order to keep captive dolphins free from disease, some locations use chlorine disinfection - which itself can cause harmful effects on the dolphins. One site using chlorine disinfection found their dolphins suffering from: - high infant mortality rates
- chronic eye problems
- skin bleaching and sloughing
- respiratory inflammation
- dehydration
- behavioural changes
With the implementation of UV disinfection the health of the dolphins, and even their behaviour, have undergone “extraordinary” improvements! In fact, the dolphin care takers are betting the elimination of chlorine "will extend their health and lives by years." Below is a short excerpt from a paper prepared by Jason Dombrosky, responsible for the care of the above mentionned dolphins. To read the full paper, click here.
