UV Disinfection for Drinking Water
Trojan offers the most advanced UV systems in the world for safeguarding drinking water from harmful microorganisms, including Cryptosporidium and Giardia.
Not only are Trojan’s Municipal Drinking Water contracts growing in scope and size, there is increasing diversity in how the innovative UV systems are being integrated with existing chemical disinfection treatments. New government legislation is changing the way communities look at safeguarding their drinking water supplies. Regulations such as the USEPA Long Term 2 Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule (requiring the treatment of Cryptosporidium) or the Ground Water Rule (requiring 4-log virus treatment) has increased the use of UV to supplement existing disinfection systems. This treatment strategy is known as “multi-barrier protection.”
The USEPA has published the Ultraviolet Disinfection Guidance Manual (USEPA UVDGM 2006) which contains background information on the fundamentals of UV disinfection technology and validation of UV equipment. A number of Trojan's drinking water UV systems have been validated in accordance to the USEPA UVDGM 2006.
Another key consideration is cost. The cost of UV technology is typically about 1/5th that of ozone disinfection and 1/10th the cost of membrane filtration.

UV Water Treatment - Cryptosporidium BarrierCryptosporidium is a harmful protozoa that can cause severe illness and even death in some individuals. Fortunately, this chlorine-resistant parasite can be easily inactivated with a low UV dose.
UV Water Treatment - Giardia BarrierGiardia can be found worldwide and is one of the most common waterborne parasites. Low UV doses can inactivate Giardia without forming disinfection by-products.
UV Water Treatment - Virus BarrierThere are a variety of viruses that may be present in water that, if not treated, may present a health risk to consumers. Examples include adenovirus, rotavirus, poliovirus, and coxsackievirus.
UV Water Treatment - Primary DisinfectionBy employing UV as the primary disinfectant, the required chemical contact time can be reduced or eliminated (dependant upon local regulations).
UV Water Treatment - Multi-Barrier StrategyUV is a perfect fit as an additional barrier in a multi-barrier strategy to provide additional public safety.
