Advanced Oxidation - Contaminant Treatment

Water sources, groundwater and surface water, are increasingly impacted by contamination. With population pressures, climate change, and overuse making every water source important, water providers are increasingly looking to advanced treatment technologies to restore contaminated sources.

Trojan specializes in developing solutions for specific contaminant treatment in water (e.g. Aurora, Colorado uses UV-oxidation to protect its drinking water). Trojan also has a dedicated laboratory for contaminant testing and research. The following are selected examples of scenarios in which Trojan UV-oxidation removes potentially harmful chemical contaminants:

Pesticides: Runoff from agricultural activities washes excess pesticides into surface waters and groundwater. Atrazine, simazine, isoproturon are examples of the wide variety of pesticides removed by Trojan UV-oxidation systems.

Nitrosamines: As disinfection by-products, NDMA and other nitrosamines have been detected in drinking water. Further, manufacturing activities in decades past have left groundwater contaminated with nitrosamines in some areas. Trojan UV-oxidation systems are cost-effectively removing these contaminants in numerous treatment facilities in North America.

1,4-Dioxane: 1,4-Dioxane is often found commingled with other solvents in contaminated groundwater.1,4-Dioxane has a low affinity for carbon materials and volatilizes slowly. Because of these properties, it migrates farther and persists longer than other contaminants in groundwater and is difficult to remove with air stripping and carbon.

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs): Examples of VOCs present in groundwater aquifers acting as drinking water supplies are trichloroethylene (TCE), tetrachloroethylene (PCE), and vinyl chloride (VC). Trojan’s UV-oxidation systems destroy VOCs, eliminating the need for treatment of off-gases from air stripping or disposal/regeneration of spent carbon.

Fuel and Fuel Additives: The accidental release of fuels and propellants has lead to the widespread contamination of groundwater by chemicals such as methyl tertiary-butyl ether (MTBE), benzene, toluene, ethylene, xylene (BTEX) and hydrazine. Contamination of water supplies is wide ranging. This is due to the large number of leaking underground storage tanks and pipes, gasoline spills, and gasoline-consuming recreational vehicle usage in reservoirs. MTBE is difficult to treat with air stripping and carbon adsorption but can be cost-effectively treated by Trojan’s UV-oxidation systems.
