Advanced Oxidation - Groundwater Remediation

In many areas, localized releases of industrial chemicals such as 1,4-dioxane and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), pesticides, petroleum additives, and other fuel components such as benzene and hydrazine, have impaired groundwater quality. These groundwater “plumes” are commonplace, and in many cases impact public water supplies or impedes the redevelopment of potentially valuable land.

ECT - Groundwater remediation

Many groundwater contaminants including 1,4-dioxane and N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) cannot be removed from water using technologies such as activated carbon, air stripping, or even reverse osmosis. Often, groundwater with mixtures of contaminants requires multiple treatment steps, including the UV advanced oxidation process (UV AOP) to reduce contaminant concentrations below levels considered safe for drinking.

UV AOP is considered in some regions to be the only technology capable of removing 1,4-dioxane. It can also be easily combined with processes such as activated carbon to remove other contaminants of concern as well such as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).
